Obama tells Harry Reid “No”

A couple of weeks ago, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid asked Obama to help the Democratic Party out by donating a little of his campaign cash to help elect more Democrats to the Senate.  Sen. Obama declined.  He has every right to do this; it is his money (or, at least, his campaign’s money), so he can spend it on whatever campaign activities he wants.  However, there are a few things we can learn from this:

  1. Cash must be tight at the Obama campaign.  You’re telling me that with all these record-setting numbers that they’ve been cranking out, they can’t spare a nickel for poor Harry?  More likely, Obama knows he is in a dogfight (and losing) and better hang on to every penny he’s got.  His organization is so massive that he is spending pretty much every dollar he can get his hand on… $60-$70 million per month.
  2. Obama’s not the only Democrat in a dogfight.  Without question, the majorities in the Senate and the House will hold for the Democrats, but the Dems must be getting worried.  If you look at recent polling, you can see why.  Pollsters often ask what is called the “Generic Ballot Question.”  Basically, they ask the person being polled whether they would vote for a Democrat or a Republican in a Generic Congressional Vote.  The Democrats have held double-digit margins in these polls for most of the last two years… until last week when most polls dropped into single-digits, averaging around +5% for the Democrats.  USA Today/Gallup even showed the GOP +5%.  With 23 GOP Senate seats up for grabs this year, the Democrats have a huge opportunity to make unprecedented gains, and they may be about to blow it.
  3. Obama is all about Obama.  It really shouldn’t surprise us that he wouldn’t help out his fellow Democrats.  He wants to be President and that is that.  He will say whatever, do whatever, think whatever, legislate whatever so he can be President.  If Harry Reid gets in his way, too bad for Harry Reid…
  4. So much for Democratic Party unity.  Didn’t they spend a week in Colorado unifying the party.  I told you then it wouldn’t happen, and, guess what?  I was right.
