Ron Paul stands his ground
Buried in the “lipstick-gate” headlines of today is a story that almost makes me wish that I had voted for Ron Paul in the primaries. Approached by Phil Gramm (who, by the way, I agree with more everyday about his “nation of whiners” comment) with a request to endorse Sen. McCain, Dr. Paul refused. Paul, like me, said that McCain is just “the lesser of two evils.” Dr. Paul has more backbone than I do, and, instead of holding his nose and supporting the (much) lesser of two evils, he is standing his ground. Of course, it helps that he is 73 and probably won’t live long enough to suffer from an Obama presidency! We need more politicians who, like Dr. Paul, don’t cave to the establishment when things get tough. On most issues (outside of foreign policy), I describe myself as a libertarian; however, I have seldom voted for one. So, I guess, I am part of the problem and not part of the solution. However, if being a part of the problem means helping ensure we don’t elect Barack Obama, then I will proudly be part of the problem.
Dr. Paul also argues for more third-party access to presidential campaigns. I agree with him on this, but I haven’t quite figured out a good way to ensure that it happens without opening the doors for every superfluous candidate that has an inkling of running for president to launch their reality-TV career. Any ideas?
