Bela Karolyi for President

I don’t know about you, but I have been enthralled by the Olympics the past week or so. Watching Michael Phelps and the rest of the US swimmers has been thrilling, but nothing has been more exciting than watching former Romanian and US Olympic Gymnastics Coach Bela Karolyi in the broadcast booth. My wife and I have laughed at him, cried with him, and just thoroughly enjoyed his contributions. After he nearly cried while defending slighted US Gymnast Alica Sacramone on Sunday night, my wife said, jokingly, that “Bela should run for President; that’s who we can vote for!” We laughed about it, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that he might be perfect for the job. In Bela lies the answer to all of the questions surrounding the two major candidates:

Foreign Policy:  Bela Karolyi was born and raised in Europe (the Democrats should like that) and has led both the US and Romanian gymnastics teams in globe-spanning competition in Canada, the US, South Korea, and Spain, winning countless medals.

Age:  Bela, at 65, is younger than McCain, soon 72, and older than Obama, 47.  Seems like a happy medium to me.

Patriotism:  There is no doubt that Bela Karolyi loves America.  He defected to America in 1981, because of persecution from the Romanian government.

National Defense:  Watching Bela defend the US gymnasts against the “rip-off” judges favoring the Chinese gymnasts lets me know that he will defend our country against all forms of terror, from Al-Qaeda or gymnastics judges.

Health Care:  Bela Karolyi has been accused of being too tough on some of his gymnasts, making them work through injuries.  As President, he will cut health care costs in half by simply telling Ameicans to “tough it out.”

Human Rights:  Bela has shown clear disdain for the Chinese Gymnastics team’s questionable adherance to the minimum age of 16 for its gymnasts.  He will fight for the elimination of child labor and other human rights atrocities throughout the globe.

The more I think about it, the more it is clear that Bela Karolyi has what it takes to be the next President of the United States.  Unfortunately, he lacks one thing: he is not a natural-born citizen of the U.S.  Oh well, one can dream about having a tough, experienced, passionate, compassionate winner as our next President.
